Hurricane Nicole

Live updates from the community

November 2022
hurricane ian safety

Dear Residents and Family,

As we monitor the progress of the incoming Hurricane Nicole, we want to keep you all as informed as possible. Similar to the precautions that were made prior to and during Hurricane Ian, we have started several implementations and plans to provide the overall safety and security for the residents and our community. In addition, we have opened our doors to more than 60 residents from a nearby assisted living community in an evacuation zone. Please be rest assured that this will not disrupt anything for the residents of Sunscape Daytona. The nearby community is coming to Sunscape with their own supplies and team members to service their residents during their stay.

We know this is a stressful time of uncertainty. Please continue to check this page for updates as we will be providing information regularly throughout the storm and after as needed. As always, you can always contact me directly with concerns. See below for the latest updates:

11.11.22 9:30AM UPDATE

As the weather improved yesterday, residents continued to enjoy activities including makeup tutorials, a Happy Hour and fitness classes. The residents from the nearby community enjoyed their stay with Sunscape and will be traveling back to their building later on today. All of the team members worked tirelessly over the past 2 days to continue to ensure the safety, security and entertainment of the residents throughout this storm.

11.10.22 11:30AM UPDATE

The storm started very strong after 4:45am and continued throughout the morning. We have experienced a few short power outages (lasting no longer than 10 minutes) and the generator worked as intended.  The telephones and internet are not working at 100% due to the storm so please be patient if you’re trying to call the community. Overall, the residents received a good night’s sleep.  Today, residents are enjoying their Chair Yoga class in the fitness room and movie matinees in the theater.

We continue to work  hard to keep residents safe during the storm.

11.09.22 5PM UPDATE

As of 5pm today, we are continuing to monitor the status and path of Tropical Storm Nicole. The community is not in an evacuation zone and plans to shelter in place, with rainy conditions are expected overnight as we do not expect the storm to hit land until tomorrow. We will send out alerts if circumstances change that disrupts any service throughout our community. However, please continue to continue to visit this page for live updates throughout the storm.

11.09.22 8AM UPDATE

The following is a list of what we have already implemented or plan to:

  • The generator, which provides power to all common areas and emergency outlets, has been topped off and tested.
  • Food, water, and general supplies have been checked, and we are sufficiently stocked.
  • Sternos, flashlights, batteries, and air mattresses have been purchased.
  • Team Leaders and Members are prepared for pre, during, and post-storm support for the community.
  • All furniture on residents’ patios will be brought inside.
  • All outdoor furniture has been moved indoors and secured.
  • Sandbags for all entryways have been obtained.
  • All roof drains have been checked and cleared.
  • All Medication Administration Records and Care Plans have been printed to ensure continuity of care.
  • All medications are being checked to ensure we have at least a 5 day supply from Tuesday on. Any medication not in five-day supply will be ordered STAT.
  • Our leadership team will hold daily meetings, more frequently, if needed, so that we can review any outstanding tasks and ensure that we are keeping you updated

Please know that we are doing all we can to maintain the safety of residents and team members. I have spoken with the Volusia County Office of Emergency Management, and we currently plan on sheltering in place. If you are planning to take your loved one to your home, please be sure to communicate with us to ensure that we have an accurate list of residents staying in the community and so that we can provide you with any medications or supplies in advance.

Stay safe,

 Liz DiSano

General Manager
